blood glucose monitoring

In place of the sugar drinking thing they usually use to screen for pregnancy induced diabetes, my midwife has had me do glucose monitoring a few times a day for three days. It took me a while to get over it the first time, but I'm now pretty good at stabbing myself with the little lancet without flinching, its almost fun ;)

The most interesting bit about the stats was the difference between the first and second days. On Thursday my blood sugar levels were in normal range and stable. Friday, they went far more extreme on both ends. I don't think extreme enough to cause concern (although the midwife will be the judge of that), but out of the normal range. And then today, a little on the low side at times, but generally stable.

The midwife only requested three days of data, but given the wackiness of the results, I'm thinking about continuing it for another day or two.

The most interesting correlation was with sleep: Thursday I'd gotten a lot of it, and was in a great mood. I took care of many things I'd been procrastinating during the day, had a lot of fun hanging out with old and new friends in the evening, and then got caught up with my newfound discovery of the lj tags feature and didn't end up getting to bed until an obscene hour, even for me ;)

So, I didn't get nearly as much sleep as I like on Friday, and generally felt grumpy and crappy. I wouldn't have thought of lack of sleep as destabilizing blood sugar levels, but I do associate both conditions as making one feel bad.

I mentioned my theory to Patri, who immediately dove for the nearest computer, and sure enough, he turned up a lot of sites talking about how sleep does indeed make one's blood sugar levels more sensitive to simple carbohydrate intake, and how it can give the appearance of diabetes.

Anyway, here're my stats:
